Ivenack Castle – A Baroque Complex with a Thousand Years of History

Ivenack Castle in Ivenack, Mecklenburg, is one of the most remarkable cultural monuments in northern Germany. The oldest part of the castle complex dates back to the 16th century, when it was still used as a monastery. Under the Imperial Counts of Plessen, significant expansions were carried out beginning in 1709: the semicircular stables, the orangery, the tea house, and the church. Around 1810, the castle took on its current form with the addition of two more wings. As a national cultural monument, it has access to federal funding for restoration in accordance with heritage preservation standards, which has been underway since 2016.

Orangery, Linden Avenue, and the Ivenack Oaks

Once the restoration is complete, Ivenack Castle will be open to the public as an authentically restored complex—featuring celebrations in the Orangery, weddings in a Baroque setting reminiscent of the landed gentry, and strolls along the linden tree-lined avenue by Lake Ivenack. Just a few minutes’ walk away stand the famous Ivenack Oaks: giant trees around 1,000 years old that were designated as Germany’s first national natural monument and attract visitors from all over Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and far beyond.

Ivenack is located in the inland region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, easily accessible from the Baltic Sea coast around Rostock, Stralsund, or Greifswald, as well as from the Mecklenburg Lake District.
