Palmer, Location
Palmer Ort is the southernmost point of the island of Rügen and, at the same time, of the Zudar Peninsula, which is part of Rügen.
The cape is located within the municipality of Garz/Rügen. Palmer Ort marks the transition from the Greifswald Bodden to the Strelasund. On the landward side, Palmer Ort is bordered by a small coastal protection forest. A forest trail runs through this forest—part of which is marked as a nature trail—leading to Palmer Ort. The nearest settlement is the small village of Grabow, located about 1 km to the northeast. At Palmer Ort itself, there is a narrow natural sandy beach that, due to its remote location, is rarely visited by tourists. Anglers use this stretch of beach to fish for pike. In winter, when ice drifts occur at Palmer Ort, ice jams frequently form, which can reach heights of several meters. In 1372, a ship carrying 90 pilgrims sank off Palmer Ort during a storm; the pilgrims were on their way to St. Lawrence Church in Zudar. Belief in an image of the Virgin Mary located there—which was said to perform miracles—disappeared after this disaster. During the Pomeranian Campaign of the Great Northern War, Palmer Ort became the scene of military operations.
