Dummerstorf Manor House

The Dummerstorf manor house is one of the oldest manor houses in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is a listed building.

The Dummerstorf manor house was built between 1714 and 1717 in the Baroque style. From 1910 it was modernized by the American Enrique Gildemeister. The granary, farm workers' houses, farm barn, horse stable, cowshed and barn (both demolished in 1981 for apartment blocks) were built or renovated. In 1933, the Nazis took over the estate and the Institute for Animal Breeding Research moved in. Since 2007, the complex has been in the hands of the current owners, who are renovating the house in close cooperation with the heritage office according to building biology principles. Cultural events take place in the manor house.

Dummerstorf Manor House - baroque heritage in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

The Dummerstorf manor house is one of the oldest preserved manor houses in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Built between 1714 and 1717 in the Baroque style, it still characterizes the townscape of Dummerstorf, which is located south of Rostock. The ensemble is a listed building and bears witness to the region's eventful estate history.

Historical development from baroque estate to research site

From 1910, the American owner Enrique Gildemeister had the estate modernized and extended - granaries, farm workers' houses, a farm barn and stables were built. In 1933, the Nazi regime took over the estate; the Institute for Animal Breeding Research then moved in. Two of the historic buildings were demolished in 1981 to make way for apartment blocks.

Refurbishment in accordance with building biology principles

The manor house complex has been in private hands since 2007. The new owners are renovating the building in close consultation with the heritage office and are following building biology principles. In addition to the restoration, the house now serves as a venue for cultural events. Anyone exploring the manor house landscape of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - for example on excursions from Rostock, Stralsund or Greifswald - will find an authentic testimony to regional architectural and cultural history in Dummerstorf.
