Domsühl village church

Domsühl · Schwerin & Umgebung · 53.4877° N, 11.7709° E
Domsühl village church

Plastered fieldstone building between ancient oak trees, decorated inside with baroque paintings.

Surrounded by a cemetery and old oak trees, some of which are protected, the church is located in the middle of the village. The remains of a medieval fieldstone building were doubled in length and plastered over around 1840. The interior decoration also dates back to this time, for example the baroque paintings on the organ loft. Only one of the three bells in the wooden bell tower, which was renovated in 1995/96, has been preserved.

Domsühl village church - a fieldstone building surrounded by ancient oaks

The village church of Domsühl is one of the quiet cultural monuments in the interior of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, away from the well-known coastal towns such as Rostock, Wismar or Stralsund. It is nestled in a cemetery, surrounded by mighty oaks, some of which are protected, which lend the ensemble a special atmosphere. The origins of the building date back to the Middle Ages, when a simple fieldstone building was erected here.

Extension and baroque interior around 1840

Around 1840, the remains of the medieval fieldstone building were extended to twice its original length and then plastered over. The current interior also dates from this construction phase - the baroque paintings on the organ loft are particularly worth seeing. The wooden bell tower was renovated in 1995 and 1996; one of the original three bells still remains today.

Domsühl and the cultural landscape of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Domsühl is located in the district of Ludwigslust-Parchim and is part of the diverse cultural landscape of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Those visiting the Baltic Sea coast with destinations such as Fischland-Darß-Zingst or Rügen will find equally rewarding excursion destinations in the inland areas of the federal state - including small village churches like this one, which tell the history of the region in a tranquil way.
