Boulder from Bergen

This boulder, approximately 8 m³ in volume and weighing about 35 t, may have been the court stone of medieval or early modern Bergen. Its location within the cityscape makes this hypothesis plausible. At that time, the courthouse was located between the market square and the monastery. However, when the district court was moved from the island to the mainland in 1803, the stone fell into obscurity and was covered by new construction. It was rediscovered during construction work in 1996. Author: Dr. Katrin Staude / Archäo Tour Rügen, archaeo-tour-ruegen.de
The Boulders of Bergen on Rügen—A Testimony to Medieval Justice
In the heart of Bergen on Rügen, the largest town on the island of the same name in northeastern Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, lies a remarkable piece of local history: the Boulders of Bergen. The granite boulder, measuring approximately 8 m³ and weighing about 35 metric tons, may once have served as a court stone in medieval and early modern Bergen. Its location between the historic market square and the monastery—where the town’s courthouse once stood—makes this hypothesis quite plausible.
Forgotten for centuries—rediscovered in 1996
When the regional court was relocated from the island of Rügen to the mainland in 1803, the massive stone gradually fell into oblivion. Over time, it was simply built over. It wasn’t until construction work in 1996 that the boulder resurfaced and sparked renewed interest. Today, it is regarded as an archaeological testament to Bergen’s city history and can be spotted in the cityscape.

Inka's art is repeatedly praised by viewers for the positive, soothing aura that the individual works have. Vibrant colors, lightness and brilliance characterize Inka's paintings. The viewer is immediately drawn into a world of joie de vivre, flowing energy, power and dancing colors. This world of joy invites you to be touched, to be infected by its lightness, to linger in its brilliance. And this is exactly how one visitor described it at the vernissage on March 2 at the Bergen City Museum on Rügen, where the solo show "Inca: Retrospective of Half a Century" runs until May 28, 2024: "I went straight home after the vernissage and did nothing else there but sit quietly on a chair and enjoy these wonderful energies that I had soaked up from your pictures." The fact that Inka's artworks usually have an uplifting effect is partly due to the clear, strong colors. On the other hand, it is also due to the fact that Inka connects herself with positive, healing forces during the painting process and thus impregnates these energies into her works. For Inka, painting is an act of joy, sensuality and gratitude. Inka's works have been shown in 56 exhibitions in Germany, Switzerland and Italy, as well as in the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and at the ARTBOX Project Miami 3.0. At KUNST:OFFEN 2024, Inka is participating in the collective exhibition at St. Spiritus in Greifswald, as well as at the Bergen City Museum. Inka's studio is also open all year round for interested parties by appointment. Please send your request to info@galerie-inka.de
