The fieldstone church in Bellin is a late Romanesque-early Gothic church building, which was built from 1230. It is part of the Evangelical Lutheran parish in the district of Rostock. The fieldstone church stands on a hill on the edge of the village. The nave with round apse in the choir is the same width as the sturdy tower with mansard roof. Fieldstone and brick were used to build the outer walls. The interior rooms have different vaults. The church's inventory includes a stone sarcophagus of Count Gerd Carl von Sala auf Bellin from the 18th century. A special feature of the Bellin church are the wall paintings from different periods. Extensive renovations were carried out in the church in the 1980s. The 14th and 15th century paintings were uncovered in the process. They depict, among other things, Adam and Eve, the Last Judgement and angels making music. In addition to scheduled Sunday services, various cultural events also take place here. The church also offers wedding ceremonies. If you would like to visit the church, please contact Mr. Ralf-Peter Laube in Bellin, Tel. 038458 20235

Bellin fieldstone church - a late Romanesque monument since 1230

The Bellin fieldstone church is one of the most remarkable medieval church buildings in the district of Rostock in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Built from 1230, it is one of the oldest preserved places of worship in the region between Rostock and the hinterland of the Baltic Sea coast. The late Romanesque-early Gothic building is visible from afar on a hill on the edge of the village of Bellin and still dominates the townscape to this day.

Fieldstones, bricks and a striking tower with a mansard roof

The outer walls of Bellin church are made of a combination of fieldstone and brick - a typical building material used in medieval village churches in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The nave with its round apse in the choir and the sturdy tower with mansard roof are the same width, giving the building an unusually compact, balanced appearance. The interior features different vault shapes and houses, among other things, a stone sarcophagus of Count Gerd Carl von Sala auf Bellin from the 18th century.

Medieval wall paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries

A particular attraction of the Bellin fieldstone church are its wall paintings, which were uncovered during extensive renovation work in the 1980s. The depictions from the 14th and 15th centuries show scenes such as Adam and Eve, the Last Judgement and angels making music. Such preserved pictorial programs are comparatively rare in the village churches of the Baltic Sea region and make the Bellin church a culturally and historically valuable testimony to regional church art.
