Dammtor Barth
The Dammtor is the only one of the city’s original four gates that has survived.
It was built in the mid-14th century, is 35 meters high, and has a 4-meter-wide passageway. The town of Barth was once accessible through four gates, of which only the Dammtor remains visible from afar today as a landmark. It was built in the mid-14th century, stands 35 meters tall, and has a 4-meter-wide passageway. The Dammtor was designed as a double gate and stands on the former protective dike facing the Bodden. Between the main gate and the outer gate, which were connected by walls, there were two moats and a rampart. Both gates were secured by inner and outer wooden gates. The Dammtor is one of the most significant architectural monuments in the town of Barth. In 2008, it underwent extensive renovation and has been shining in new splendor ever since.
The Dammtor in Barth—the only surviving city gate of the Hanseatic city
The Dammtor in Barth is the last of four original city gates that once guarded the entrance to the city. Built in the mid-14th century, the imposing 35-meter-high brick structure still towers over the city’s rooftops today and is considered one of Barth’s most significant architectural landmarks. The passageway, just four meters wide, gives a sense of how narrow and strictly controlled access to the medieval town once was.
Double Gate on the protective embankment along the Barther Bodden
The Dammtor was originally designed as a double gate and stood on the former protective embankment in front of the Barther Bodden. Between the main gate and the outer gate, connected by massive walls, lay two moats and a rampart. In addition, inner and outer wooden gates secured both gate complexes—a defensive construction method typical of the Middle Ages that can also be found at other locations along the Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, such as in Stralsund or Greifswald.
2008 Renovation—the Barth Dammtor in New Splendor
In 2008, the Dammtor underwent extensive renovation and has been in excellent condition ever since. As a landmark of the town of Barth visible from afar, it is a popular photo spot for visitors to the Fischland-Darß-Zingst region who, on their excursions along the Vorpommern Baltic Sea coast, also explore the historic old town of Barth.
