The "Svantevitstein" is an image stone made of granite, on which a man with a chin and moustache can be seen in relief. He is wearing a caftan-like skirt or a fitted coat, cap and shoes and is holding a drinking horn in his hands. Similarities to the god Svantevit from the sanctuary in the castle at Cape Arkona are recognizable. The stone, also referred to as a grave slab, was only walled in after the parish church in Altenkirchen was built. It could be the remains of a Slavic burial. Svantevite stone in the church of Altenkirchen - a Slavic mystery in stone

In the parish church of Altenkirchen on the island of Rügen, the Svantevitstein is one of the most fascinating archaeological testimonies to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Slavic past. The granite image stone shows a relief of a bearded man with a chin and moustache, wearing a caftan-like skirt, a cap and shoes and holding a drinking horn in his hands.

Connection to the sanctuary of Cape Arkona on Rügen

The stone bears clear similarities to depictions of the Slavic god Svantevit, who was worshipped in the nearby sanctuary of the castle at Cape Arkona. It is possible that the Svantevit stone is the remains of a Slavic burial. After the parish church was built, the stone - also known as a grave slab - was placed horizontally in its masonry.
