Broock Castle and Estate

Broock Castle and Estate
📍

Gutshof Broock 1-13

17129 Alt Tellin

Broock Castle, once the social hub of the region and the largest private stud farm in Western Pomerania, will be developed into a supra-regional conference and cultural center in the coming years. Since May 2023, our guests have been catered for in the new village store with café-bistro and beer garden. Broock Castle was built for Major General Christan Bogislaw von Linden as a grand, late baroque manor house in 1770-77. The heir, Carl von Gentzkow, established horse breeding at the beginning of the 19th century, which developed into the largest private stud farm in Western Pomerania under his successors, the Barons von Seckendorff, and existed until 1945. In 1841-43, Friedrich August Stüler, the "master builder to the King of Prussia", was commissioned to rebuild the castle in the so-called "Castle Gothic" style. At the same time, the celebrated garden artist Peter Joseph Lenné provided the plans for the transformation of the park into an English landscape garden. In the 19th century, Broock was the social center and meeting place for the nobility of the entire region. Balls and elegant hunting parties took turns. In 1945, the estate was expropriated, refugee families were accommodated in the castle and a supermarket, kindergarten, school and municipal office were set up. In 1974, the municipality sold the castle to VEB Kranbau Eberswalde. Plans to set up a vacation home for employees never came to fruition. In 2017, after 43 years of looting and decay, Schloss Broock GmbH & Co. KG became the owner of the complex and revived the idyllic location in the beautiful Tollensetal valley. With the support of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Federal Republic of Germany - which classifies Broock as a monument of special national importance - and the German Foundation for Monument Protection, work began in 2018 on the emergency restoration of the castle ruins. In the coming years, a supra-regional cultural and conference center will be built in Broock. Concerts, festivals and private events are already taking place in the historic riding hall, which also hosts the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival. After decades without a shop or restaurant in Broock, our village store with café-bistro, beer garden and regional products was opened on the edge of the estate in May 2023 and is very popular with our guests.

Broock Castle and Estate in Alt Tellin - history since the 18th century

The Broock castle and estate in Alt Tellin is one of the most remarkable historical ensembles in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The late baroque manor house was built between 1770 and 1777 for Major General Christian Bogislaw von Linden. In the 19th century, the von Seckendorff family established the largest private stud farm in Western Pomerania here, which existed until 1945. At the time, Broock Castle was the social center for the nobility of the entire region - from Greifswald to Stralsund.

Stüler's conversion and Lenné's landscape garden in Broock

Between 1841 and 1843, Friedrich August Stüler, the "master builder to the King of Prussia", redesigned the palace in the so-called Castle Gothic style. At the same time, the renowned garden artist Peter Joseph Lenné drew up plans for an English landscape garden. This park, nestled in the idyllic Tollensetal valley, makes the estate an extraordinary ensemble that is unparalleled in its historical density in the Baltic Sea region.

Monument of national importance - renovation and new use

After decades of decay, Schloss Broock GmbH & Co. KG took over the complex. With the support of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the federal government and the German Foundation for Monument Protection - which classifies Broock as a monument of special national importance - the emergency restoration of the castle ruins began in 2018. In the coming years, a supra-regional cultural and conference center will be built here. Concerts and events are already taking place in the historic riding hall, including with the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival.

Village store with café-bistro and beer garden on the estate

It is equally popular with visitors from all over the area - whether as an excursion destination from Greifswald, Demmin or the nearby Tollensesee Valley.

Kunsthaus Frank Kamp

Kunsthaus Frank Kamp

📍 Alt Tellin

The creative potential in the cultural sector and the scenic conditions in the Tollensetal offer a variety of opportunities to preserve and promote art, culture and monument protection in sustainable educational work. The artist Frank Kamp (1961-2020) bequeathed his house and artistic legacy to the association on the condition that the house and grounds be made permanently accessible as a public cultural site. There are many people living in the region who are artistically active in various ways. With the Kunsthaus, we offer an intimate platform for all kinds of art. This includes lectures on various topics, readings and poetry slams - a stage on a small scale, even for beginners. Works of art by regional artists will find their place in an exhibition. The offer also applies to "newcomers" who have not yet had the opportunity to show their work in order to draw attention to their creations. The Kunsthaus is also offered as a place for artists in residence. The well-equipped studio enables a variety of artistic work in the tranquillity of the village of Wietzow.
