Alt Schwerin Manor House
The stately manor house with its high mansard roof was built in 1733 using the typical North German red clinker brick.
Of particular note is the intricately crafted wrought-iron gate, which originally came from the Vollrathsruhe estate and received a special award at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. While in town, it’s worth visiting the Agricultural History Museum, which features exhibits on the history of large-scale agriculture east of the Elbe from the mid-19th century to the present.
Alt Schwerin Manor House – 18th-Century Red-Brick Manor
The Alt Schwerin Manor House is one of the most remarkable manor houses in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The stately building, with its characteristic high mansard roof, was built in 1733 using the typical North German red brick and continues to shape the townscape of Alt Schwerin to this day. Such manor houses are a defining feature of the cultural landscape between the Baltic Sea coast and the Mecklenburg Lake District.
Award-winning wrought-iron gate from the Vollrathsruhe manor house
The estate’s ornate wrought-iron gate is particularly worth seeing. It does not originally come from Alt Schwerin itself, but from the nearby Vollrathsruhe manor house. The gate gained international recognition when it was awarded a special prize at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago—an impressive testament to Mecklenburg craftsmanship.
Alt Schwerin Agricultural History Museum – History of Large-Scale Agriculture
Visitors to the town should not miss the Agricultural History Museum in Alt Schwerin. It is dedicated to the history of large-scale agriculture east of the Elbe from the mid-19th century to the present day. The museum thus offers an insightful look at the agricultural development of the entire region—complementing the well-known coastal destinations such as Rostock, Stralsund, or the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula.

AGRONEUM Alt Schwerin
● Alt Schwerin
The village of Alt Schwerin is nestled in the Mecklenburg Lake District and the Nossentiner-Schwinzer Heide Nature Park. As early as 1963, the decision was made to bring the history of Mecklenburg's estates and agriculture to life in an exemplary way in the midst of the historically grown substance. And so the AGRONEUM Alt Schwerin, an open-air museum of a special kind, can now look back on more than 60 years of history. You can expect an extensive collection of technology and everyday objects in numerous exhibition buildings and insights into the life of farm workers from 1800 to the 1960s. The large open-air site with village smithy, wheelwright's workshop, Dutch windmill, sawmill and ropery is also the central venue for the almost monthly museum festivals, where agricultural history is presented in a lively way. In addition, there are demonstrations, hands-on activities, blacksmithing and vacation workshops that build a bridge between then and now and impart knowledge in a vivid way. Our steam locomobile (built in 1915) from the Heucke company welcomes you in the glass entrance building. Here you will also find a well-stocked farm store with an extensive range of seasonal and regional products, beautiful and useful items. The restaurant "Pott un Pann" with its terrace and Mecklenburg country fare as well as coffee and cake invites you to linger and enjoy. You can find the entire program of events, opening times and admission prices at www.agroneum-altschwerin.de
