Alt Damerow village church

The small rectangular half-timbered church in the center of the village is located in the immediate vicinity of the Pingelhof open-air agricultural museum.

It was probably built after the Thirty Years' War and before 1700. The members of the Pingel family, who once ran the Pingelhof, now a museum, as a real farm, are buried in the cemetery of the Alt Damerow village church. Village center and witness to the past - After plans were made in the mid-1990s to demolish the dilapidated building and rebuild it in the Mueß/Schwerin open-air museum, great resistance grew, so that the church was completely renovated thanks to numerous local initiatives and reopened in 1998. Even the small bell in the ridge turret, which for a long time could not live up to its inscription "Up and down and up again is my whole course of life" and was only operated by a clapper, has been moving by itself again since the renovation. The members of the Pingel family, who once ran what is now the Pingelhof Museum as a real farm, are buried in the cemetery surrounding the church.

Village church Alt Damerow - half-timbered church with an eventful history

The village church of Alt Damerow is located in the heart of the small village of Alt Damerow in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is one of the quiet but impressive witnesses to rural history in the inland area behind the Baltic Sea coast. The rectangular half-timbered church was probably built after the Thirty Years' War and before 1700 and has shaped the center of the village ever since.

Saved from demolition - renovation and reopening in 1998

In the mid-1990s, the dilapidated church was threatened with demolition - it was to be taken down and rebuilt in the Mueß open-air museum near Schwerin. However, thanks to widespread opposition in the region and numerous local initiatives, the building was completely renovated on site and reopened in 1998. Since then, the small bell in the ridge turret has also been moving independently again - for a long time it could only be operated by a clapper. Its inscription "Up and down and up again is my whole course of life" could hardly be more fitting for the history of this remarkable building.

Cemetery and the Pingel family - connection to the open-air agricultural museum

The Pingelhof open-air agricultural museum is located right next to the church and offers an authentic insight into the everyday farming culture of the region. Members of the Pingel family are buried in the cemetery around the Alt Damerow village church, who once ran what is now the museum farm as a real farm. Together, the church and museum form a unique historical ensemble that is unparalleled far beyond the Mecklenburg coastal region between Rostock and Stralsund.
