The church in Alt Bukow is one of the most distinctive religious buildings in rural Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The historic church building is located in the small village of Alt Bukow, not far from the Baltic Sea coast between Rostock and Wismar. The single-nave Gothic brick church was built in the 15th century and continues to shape the village’s appearance to this day.
Distinctive West Tower and Medieval Architecture
Particularly striking is the massive square tower on the west side of the church. It is as wide as the entire nave—an unusual and impressive feature in North German brick Gothic architecture. This design gives the church a squat, fortified appearance, as is occasionally found in the region between Stralsund and Wismar.
East Window by Lothar Mannewitz—Art from the 1960s
Inside the church is a remarkable work of art: The east window was designed around 1960 by the artist Lothar Mannewitz and depicts the risen Christ. It bridges the building’s medieval architecture with an example of modern stained glass from the postwar period in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
