The Alte Schule Gallery in Ahrenshoop is a central location for art history on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. With its changing exhibitions, it combines the tradition of the legendary Ahrenshoop artists' colony with classical modernism and contemporary art. Ahrenshoop is therefore one of the most important art locations between Rostock, Stralsund and Greifswald.

Works by renowned artists from the Ahrenshoop artists' colony

The gallery's exhibitions bring together works by artists from different eras. They include Hermann Glöckner, Edmund Kesting and Hans-Otto Gehrcke from the colony's early decades, as well as figures from classical modernism such as Max Uhlig and Wolfgang Leber. Contemporary positions are represented by artists such as Moritz Götze, Wieland Payer, Fritz Bornstück and Christopher Lehmpfuhl. Ahrenshoop

The tradition-steeped Künstlerhaus Lukas is a place for artistic work and international encounters. It supports professional artists in the fields of visual arts, literature, dance, composition and curators by awarding residency scholarships. Künstlerhaus Lukas was built in 1894 by the painter Paul Müller-Kaempff, the founder of the Ahrenshoop artists' colony, as a boarding house and studio for his painting students and named after the patron saint of painters, St. Lucas. Today, the house is a workplace for artists from all over Germany and many countries in Northern Europe. They can devote themselves to their own works or initiate joint projects during scholarship-funded work stays. On the last Sunday of every month, the scholarship holders of the Künstlerhaus Lukas regularly host an open day. Studio talks, short readings and other events take place. The house also presents special events for some of the town's annual cultural highlights, such as the Ahrenshoop Literature Days or Ahrenshoop Film Nights.
