Bertha Klingberg sculpture
Bertha Klingberg sculpture in Schwerin Ostorf - a monument to an original
Sitting smiling on a wall on the banks of the Burgsee lake in Schwerin Ostorf is the Bertha Klingberg sculpture, a life-size bronze figure by sculptor Bernd Streiter, inaugurated in June 2010. With a bouquet of flowers in her lap and a watering can at her side, the monument commemorates one of the most famous personalities of the Mecklenburg state capital. The square on which the sculpture stands bears her name - on the former entrance square to the 2009 Federal Garden Show.
Flower seller, honorary citizen and Schwerin legendBertha Klingberg was born in Hamburg in 1898, but grew up with her grandparents in Bützow and eventually moved to Schwerin. For decades, she sold flowers in Schwerin's old town - always wearing the traditional Rehna costume. In 2002, she was made an honorary citizen of Schwerin. When she started a petition for Schwerin to become the state capital in 1990, she gained over 17,000 signatories. She died in 2005 at the age of 107. Anyone who travels to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and knows places like Wismar, Rostock or Stralsund will find this monument in Schwerin a particularly personal insight into the region's history.
