Observation tower "Elwkieker" Boizenburg

Observation tower "Elwkieker" Boizenburg
NOTE: Due to the danger of landslides in the area of the Elbe slope, the Elwkieker observation tower and its apron are currently closed! The Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has its own special charm at any time of year. The area between Dömitz and Boizenburg is particularly popular because a unique floodplain landscape has developed here that is very close to nature. The "Elwkieker" viewpoint near Boizenburg-Vier not only offers a fantastic view over the Elbe river and the fascinating dyke foreland with its sometimes steep Elbe banks and sandy heathland, it also provides a view far into Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. The "Elwkieker" observation tower and the "EinFlussReich" open-air exhibition above the Elbhang staircase are also good starting points for a circular walk through the Vierwald forest. A narrow, hilly path first leads through a species-rich mixed forest to the almost 60-metre-high Köpelberg, before returning to Vier via a former border control path, the so-called Kolonnenweg. The hike takes around 2.5 hours. The Vierwald is particularly beautiful in spring, when the Elbe shimmers through the first delicate green of the hillside forest, or in autumn, when the species-rich mixed forest takes on its colorful foliage.

Panoramic view over the Elbe floodplains, dyke foreland and heathland

Under normal conditions, the "Elwkieker" viewpoint offers an impressive panorama: the view extends over the Elbe river, the extensive dyke foreland with its steep Elbe river banks and sandy heathland as far as Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. The excursion destination is complemented by the open-air exhibition "EinFlussReich" above the Elbe slope stairs - an educational introduction to the unique floodplain landscape between Dömitz and Boizenburg.

Round walk through the Vierwald forest to Köpelberg

The Elwkieker and the open-air exhibition are also the starting point for a 2.5-hour circular hike through the Vierwald forest. A narrow, hilly path leads through species-rich mixed forest up to the almost 60-metre-high Köpelberg, before returning to Vier via the historic Kolonnenweg, a former border control path. The forest is particularly attractive in spring, when the delicate green of the hillside forest lets the Elbe shimmer through, and in autumn with its colorful foliage. Those who love the natural landscapes of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - whether on the Baltic Sea coast near Wismar or Rostock, on Rügen or Fischland-Darß-Zingst - will find an equally diverse natural backdrop here inland.
