Lake Plauer See circular bus stop 12 - Malchow earth dam in the Mecklenburg Lake District
Bus stop 12 of the Plauer See circular bus is located directly on the earth dam in Malchow - one of the most remarkable historical structures in the Mecklenburg Lake District. The dam connects the picturesque old town on the island with the Malchow monastery and was built between 1844 and 1846 under Mayor Friedrich Meyer. Anyone exploring the region around the Baltic Sea and its lake landscape will find this a delightful stopover.
History of the Malchow earth dam - from wooden bridge to landmarkThe island town of Malchow, first mentioned in a document in 1147, looks back on an eventful history. After the original wooden bridge was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War, citizens created a man-made embankment as a new connection. This was even breached by water during the construction work - but was nevertheless completed. Since 1875, a stone monument on the embankment has commemorated Mayor Meyer.
Linden avenue and lake view - lingering on the Malchow earth dam
Today, the earth dam with its magnificent avenue of lime trees and numerous seating areas invites you to pause for a moment. The unique view of the water and the historic island town makes this place a special excursion destination in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania - whether as a stop on the Lake Plau circular bus or as a destination in its own right on a round trip through the region between Rostock, Stralsund and the Mecklenburg Lake District.
