Kücken-Stiftung Schwerin - History at the Pfaffenteich

The representative neoclassical building on the south bank of the Pfaffenteich was built at the end of the 1860s. Composer Friedrich-Wilhelm Kücken established the foundation that gave the building its name, which supported destitute musicians until 1939. Today, the building houses a restaurant and the ZDF regional studio. The imposing residential building was built between 1866 and 1868 on the south bank of Schwerin's Pfaffenteich lake. The Schwerin composer Friedrich-Wilhelm-Kücken initially lived in the house and later acquired the entire building. He established a foundation here that housed and cared for musicians in financial need. After Kücken's death in 1882, the Kücken Foundation continued this charitable work until the late 1930s. A bust by sculptor Ludwig Brunow in front of the house commemorates the founder. Today, the ZDF regional studio has its premises in the house. The "Friedrichs" café and restaurant is also located on the first floor. Since 2022, the house of the Kücken Foundation has also served as the "Hotel Mondial", the filming location for the television production of the same name.

The Kücken Foundation in Schwerin is one of the most remarkable historical buildings in the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The representative neoclassical residential building was built between 1866 and 1868 on the south bank of the Pfaffenteich. Its most prominent resident was the Schwerin composer Friedrich-Wilhelm Kücken, who later acquired the building in its entirety and established a foundation here to support destitute musicians.

After Kücken's death in 1882, the foundation continued its charitable work until the late 1930s and accommodated musicians in financial need. A bust by sculptor Ludwig Brunow in front of the house still commemorates the founder today - a silent salute to an important son of the city, as can also be found in other historic cities in the Baltic Sea region such as Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund.

Today, the building is used for a variety of purposes: The ZDF regional studio has its premises here, and the "Friedrichs" café & restaurant on the first floor invites you to take a break. Since 2022, the building has also served as a filming location for the TV production "Hotel Mondial" - combining history with contemporary media life in Schwerin's city center.
