Penkun Castle - medieval border castle in Western Pomerania
Penkun Castle is one of the most remarkable historical buildings in inland Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. A castle was first mentioned on this site around 1190, which the Pomeranian dukes expanded into a border castle in the 13th century. Between 1484 and 1486, the current castle was built incorporating the previous building, which was given its characteristic Renaissance look between 1580 and 1590 - presumably under the direction of Thaddäus Paglion.
Museums and exhibitions at Penkun Castle
The castle association runs a border and customs museum in the former caretaker's house, which is a reminder of Penkun's special location as a former border region. In the castle cellar, a permanent exhibition sheds light on the historical court system in Pomerania. In addition, there are regularly changing exhibitions in various rooms. The gatekeeper's building on the extensive castle grounds is also used as a museum.
Rescue and restoration of an architectural monument
Following the expropriation of the von der Osten family after the Second World War, the castle served as a school with boarding school and agricultural training center. By the end of the 1980s, it was in serious disrepair. Thanks to the commitment of the citizens of Penkun and the municipality as well as the support of the German Foundation for Monument Protection between 1991 and 2001, the castle was saved and extensively restored.
Discover Penkun Castle in the castle parkIn addition to the exhibition rooms, the castle grounds also include an extensive castle park and former stables. Penkun is located in southern Western Pomerania and is a worthwhile excursion for guests who want to visit the Baltic coast around Greifswald or Stralsund and immerse themselves in the historic hinterland.
